Across 15,521 men measured by health professionals, average erect circumference was 11.66 cm (4.59 inches) and average flaccid circumference 9.31 cm (3.66 inches). Average erect length was 13.12 cm (5.16 inches).
The most reliable data comes from a 2015 systematic review published in BJU International, which pooled 17 studies covering up to 15,521 men. Crucially, all measurements were taken by health professionals using standardised procedures — not self-reported, which matters enormously, because self-reported figures run consistently higher.
| Measurement | Average | In inches |
|---|---|---|
| Erect circumference | 11.66 cm | 4.59 in |
| Flaccid circumference | 9.31 cm | 3.66 in |
| Erect length | 13.12 cm | 5.16 in |
4.5 inches is essentially exactly average. The measured mean is 4.59 inches. If that is your measurement, you are within the middle of the distribution — not below it.
If you mean length: yes, comfortably above average. The measured mean erect length is 5.16 inches, so 7 inches sits well into the upper portion of the distribution.
Published studies report girth gains of roughly 2.1 to 2.9 cm of circumference — see the measured gains. Against an average of 11.66 cm, that is a meaningful proportional change, but it is not transformative, and it is circumference only.
The SMSNA's 2024 position statement notes that most men seeking cosmetic penile enhancement have penises within normal ranges.
Research also consistently finds that men's self-assessment correlates poorly with actual measurement — men systematically underestimate themselves relative to the distribution, partly because comparison material is unrepresentative.
Before choosing a procedure, it is worth knowing where you actually sit.
If you measure within normal range and remain persistently distressed, that distress is real — but a procedure may not resolve it. The SMSNA recommends structured screening for body dysmorphic disorder before any augmentation, and states augmentation is not appropriate in men with uncontrolled psychological conditions.
This is not a dismissal. It is that treating anatomy will not fix a problem that is not anatomical. See when enhancement is not the answer.
Being average is not a reason you cannot choose enhancement. Plenty of men make that choice with clear eyes, and that is legitimate. The point of this page is that you should make it knowing where you actually stand — not on the basis of a comparison that was never accurate.

Several reasons: pornography is a selected rather than representative sample, self-reported figures run higher than professionally measured ones, and looking down at yourself foreshortens the view. Research consistently finds men underestimate themselves relative to the actual distribution.
That is your decision, and being average does not disqualify you. But the SMSNA notes most men seeking enhancement are already within normal range, and if you are distressed despite measuring normally, a procedure may not resolve the underlying feeling.
A consultation includes accurate measurement and an honest conversation about whether a procedure would achieve what you want.
