Three Problems, Often Confused

Almost everyone who comes in asking about body sculpting has one of three distinct issues, and treating the wrong one is the main reason people are disappointed.

1. Localized subcutaneous fat

A discrete pocket you can pinch, in someone otherwise near their goal weight, that has not responded to diet and training. This is what body contouring actually treats — through cryolipolysis or, under the chin, Kybella.

2. Skin laxity

Loose or crepey skin, common after significant weight loss or pregnancy. Fat reduction makes this worse, not better, because removing volume beneath lax skin increases the sag. This needs skin tightening — RF microneedling for mild to moderate laxity, or surgery when the excess is substantial.

3. Excess weight

Generalized rather than localized. No contouring treatment addresses this — the volumes removed are simply too small. Medically supervised weight loss is the appropriate route, and contouring afterward can refine what remains.

A quick self-check

Pinch the area. If you can grasp a distinct roll between your fingers, that is subcutaneous fat and contouring may help. If the abdomen is firm and you cannot pinch much, that suggests visceral fat inside the abdominal cavity — which no external device reaches, and which responds to weight loss.

What We Offer, and What We Do Not

Cryolipolysis — controlled cooling that permanently destroys fat cells in a treated pocket. Roughly 20 to 25 percent reduction of the fat layer per session, no downtime.

Kybella — injectable deoxycholic acid for submental fat under the chin. Permanent, but with significant swelling for days to weeks.

RF microneedling — for the skin quality and mild laxity component rather than the fat.

What we do not offer, and will not pretend otherwise: we are not a surgical practice. Substantial loose skin after major weight loss needs a body contouring surgeon. Large-volume fat removal needs liposuction. If that is what your situation calls for, the honest recommendation is a surgical opinion, and that is what you will get.

Muscle is the missing piece

Body composition is fat and muscle, and contouring only addresses one. Patients frequently get better results from resistance training than from any device, because building muscle changes shape in ways fat reduction alone cannot. If you are not training, that conversation is worth more than a treatment plan.

How We Approach Body Treatments

We will tell you if you are not a candidate

Body contouring works within narrow limits, and the most common reason patients are disappointed is that they were treated when they should not have been. If your goal is weight loss, or if loose skin rather than fat is the issue, contouring will not deliver — and you will hear that at the consultation.

A physician assesses you

Dr. Daniel Moghadam performs the assessment personally, including determining whether what you are pinching is subcutaneous fat that responds to treatment or visceral fat that does not.

Realistic numbers, not marketing ones

You will get an honest estimate of how much change to expect and how many sessions it will take, before you commit to anything.

Body Sculpting Questions

No, and conflating them is the most common misunderstanding. Body sculpting reduces a localized pocket of fat in someone already near their goal weight — it is a contouring tool. The volumes involved are far too small to address generalized excess weight. If weight loss is your goal, a medically supervised programme is the right route.

Pinch the area. If you can grasp a distinct roll, that is subcutaneous fat and contouring may help. If the skin feels thin and crepey and there is little to pinch, laxity is the issue — and reducing fat would make it worse. A firm abdomen you cannot pinch suggests visceral fat, which no external device reaches.

No. Fat reduction removes volume beneath the skin, which can make existing laxity more apparent. If loose skin is your main concern, RF microneedling addresses mild to moderate laxity, and significant excess requires surgery. We will tell you which category you are in.

Visceral fat sits inside the abdominal cavity around your organs, rather than under the skin. It cannot be reached by any external device, and it is the type most strongly linked to metabolic and cardiovascular risk. It responds well to weight loss and exercise. A firm abdomen you cannot pinch usually indicates it.

No — we are not a surgical practice. If your situation genuinely calls for liposuction or a body contouring procedure such as a tummy tuck, the honest recommendation is a surgical opinion and that is what we will give you rather than offering a non-surgical option that cannot deliver.

For cryolipolysis, change begins around three weeks and is typically complete by twelve, since your body clears the destroyed fat cells gradually. Skin tightening treatments build over a similar or longer timeframe as collagen remodels.

The fat cells destroyed do not return, and adults do not generate meaningful numbers of new ones. However, the remaining fat cells in the area can enlarge with weight gain, and fat can accumulate elsewhere. The result holds provided your weight stays reasonably stable.

Usually yes. Body contouring works best in people already near their goal weight, because it treats discrete pockets rather than generalized fat. Treating before significant weight loss often means paying for a result that changes anyway. We will advise on sequencing at your consultation.
