Not a filler — a collagen stimulator. Sculptra prompts your own body to rebuild volume over months, so the change arrives too gradually for anyone to date it.
Every hyaluronic acid filler works by occupying space — inject the gel, see the volume immediately. Sculptra does not do that. Its active ingredient is poly-L-lactic acid, a biocompatible material that has been used in dissolvable surgical sutures for decades.
When injected into the deep dermis, PLLA provokes a controlled healing response. Over the following weeks your fibroblasts lay down new type I collagen along the particles, and the particles themselves gradually break down into carbon dioxide and water. What remains is your own collagen.
That is why the outcome looks so natural: the volume is genuinely yours, distributed the way your own tissue distributes it. It is also why nothing much happens for the first few weeks — a point patients need to understand before they start.
Sculptra is not used in lips, and it is not appropriate for the tear trough.
Sculptra is a series, not a single appointment. Most patients need two to three sessions spaced four to six weeks apart, with a general guide of one vial per decade of life for a first course.
Results build from around six weeks and continue developing for three to six months. Full collagen remodeling takes time, which is the trade-off for longevity: results commonly last two years or more, longer than any hyaluronic acid filler.
We ask patients to massage the treated areas — the widely used guide is five minutes, five times a day, for five days. This distributes the particles evenly and reduces the risk of nodules. It is not optional, and patients who skip it are more likely to develop small firm areas under the skin.
Sculptra is not reversible. Unlike hyaluronic acid, there is no enzyme that dissolves it. This is precisely why we dose conservatively and stage treatment across sessions rather than trying to achieve everything at once. If you want a treatment you can undo, an HA filler is the better choice.
Filler is not a commodity procedure. Where product sits relative to bone, muscle, and vasculature decides whether a result looks refreshed or overdone. At Modern Aesthetica the founder and medical director, Dr. Daniel Moghadam, performs the injections himself rather than delegating to a technician.
We do not begin with a product. We begin with what is actually happening in your face — where volume has gone, how your skin behaves when it moves, how light falls across your cheekbones. The right filler follows from that. Sometimes the answer is a different treatment entirely, and we will say so.
We would rather place less and refine at your follow-up than overfill. Hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved if needed, but a face that has been overcorrected takes real time to recover its proportions.
Fillers are priced per syringe. You will know how many syringes are planned and what the total is before anything is injected. Current offers are on our promotions page.
Good candidates have generalized volume loss rather than one specific line, want gradual change, are comfortable waiting months for the full result, and want longevity.
Less suitable if you need a result before an event in the next few weeks, want one precise area corrected, want the option to reverse it, or have an active skin infection in the area. Patients with a history of keloid scarring or certain autoimmune conditions should discuss suitability carefully.
Many patients combine approaches — Sculptra for foundational volume, hyaluronic acid filler for precise contouring, and Botox for movement lines. Dr. Moghadam will map a sequence rather than selling you a single product.
Expect some swelling and the possibility of bruising — this is an injection, and the face is vascular. Most swelling resolves within three to five days, and the result you will keep is visible at about two weeks.
Call us at (213) 895-4730 if you develop unusual pain, blanching or dusky discoloration of the skin, or vision changes. These are rare, but they are treated urgently — one more reason to be injected by a physician.
You will not see much for the first few weeks. Visible change typically begins around six weeks and continues developing for three to six months as collagen builds. Any immediate fullness right after treatment is the sterile water the product is mixed with, and it resolves within a day or two — it is not your result.
Two years or more for most patients, which is longer than any hyaluronic acid filler. Because the volume comes from your own collagen rather than a gel, it fades very gradually. Many patients return for a smaller maintenance session at around the two-year mark.
Most patients need two to three sessions spaced four to six weeks apart. A common starting guide is one vial per decade of life for a first course. Dr. Moghadam will map your plan at consultation based on how much volume has been lost.
It is comparable to other injectable treatments. Sculptra is mixed with lidocaine and we apply topical numbing first. You may feel more pressure than with a standard filler because the product is placed across a broader area. Mild tenderness for a day or two afterward is normal.
Massage distributes the poly-L-lactic acid particles evenly through the tissue, which produces a smoother result and substantially reduces the risk of small firm nodules forming. The widely used guide is five minutes, five times a day, for five days. Patients who skip this step have a higher rate of nodules, so we treat it as part of the treatment rather than an optional extra.
No. Unlike hyaluronic acid fillers, there is no enzyme that reverses Sculptra. This is why we dose conservatively and build results across multiple sessions rather than aiming for the final outcome in one visit. If reversibility matters to you, an HA filler such as Voluma or Restylane Lyft is the better option.
Choose a hyaluronic acid filler if you want immediate results, precise correction of a specific area, or the ability to reverse it. Choose Sculptra if you have generalized volume loss, want a gradual change nobody can pinpoint, and want results measured in years. Many patients ultimately use both for different purposes.
Sculptra is priced per vial, and most patients need several vials across two to three sessions. Because the total depends on how much volume you have lost, we quote the full course at your complimentary consultation so you know the complete cost before starting. Call (213) 895-4730 to book.
