Microneedling plus radiofrequency heat — collagen remodeling deep enough to soften acne scars and tighten skin, without surgery.
Traditional microneedling creates thousands of microscopic channels in the skin. That injury alone triggers collagen production — a real effect, but a relatively superficial one.
RF microneedling adds heat. The needles are insulated and deliver radiofrequency energy from their tips at a controlled depth, so thermal energy reaches the deep dermis without burning the surface. Heat is what causes existing collagen fibers to contract immediately and drives a far more substantial remodeling response afterward.
The practical difference: needling alone improves surface texture, while RF microneedling can meaningfully tighten skin and reach the fibrous tissue that tethers acne scars.
Because RF energy is delivered below the surface and does not target pigment the way many lasers do, RF microneedling carries a lower risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation in deeper skin tones than ablative resurfacing. For many patients with Fitzpatrick IV–VI skin it is among the safer options for texture and scarring — though settings still need to be chosen carefully.
This is a course of treatment, not a single appointment. Most patients need three to four sessions spaced four to six weeks apart; significant acne scarring may need more.
Collagen remodeling is slow. Expect initial improvement at four to six weeks and continued improvement for three to six months after your final session. The result you see at week two is not the result you are paying for.
Afterward: no makeup for 24 hours, gentle cleansing only, no retinoids or acids for about a week, and rigorous daily sun protection. Skipping sunscreen after treatment is the fastest way to cause the pigment problem you were trying to avoid.
Device settings, depth, and how aggressively to treat are medical decisions, not spa settings. At Modern Aesthetica the founder and medical director, Dr. Daniel Moghadam, oversees and performs these treatments personally rather than delegating them to a technician working from a preset.
We start with your skin — its thickness, laxity, pigment behavior, scarring, and how it has historically healed. The treatment follows from that assessment. Sometimes the honest answer is a different treatment entirely, and we will say so.
Energy-based treatments reward patience. We build results across a planned series rather than pushing a single aggressive session that risks prolonged redness or, in deeper skin tones, pigment change.
You will know how many sessions are planned and what the full course costs before you begin. Current offers are on our promotions page.
Versus laser resurfacing: ablative lasers can achieve more dramatic surface renewal but with longer downtime and higher pigment risk in deeper skin tones. RF microneedling trades some intensity for safety and shorter recovery.
Versus standard microneedling: RF reaches deeper and adds tightening. For fine texture alone, traditional needling may be enough; for scarring or laxity, RF is materially better.
Versus a thread lift: different mechanisms. Threads mechanically reposition tissue; RF tightens skin quality. Advanced sagging needs lifting, not just tightening.
Combined with PRP: applying platelet-rich plasma after treatment delivers concentrated growth factors into the freshly created channels, which many patients find accelerates healing and improves the final result.
Most patients need three to four sessions spaced four to six weeks apart. Significant acne scarring often needs four to six. Because collagen remodeling continues for months, we assess your final result about three months after the last session rather than immediately.
We apply strong topical numbing for about thirty minutes beforehand, which makes the treatment tolerable for most patients. You will feel pressure, heat, and a prickling sensation, more noticeable over bony areas such as the forehead and jawline. Afterward it feels like a sunburn for a day or so rather than being painful.
Expect redness like a moderate sunburn for one to two days, sometimes mild swelling, and a fine sandpaper texture as the skin sheds around days two to four. Most patients wear makeup comfortably by day three. Plan treatment at least a week before an important event.
It is one of the safer energy-based options for Fitzpatrick IV–VI skin. Because the radiofrequency energy is delivered below the surface and does not target melanin the way many lasers do, the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is lower. Settings still need to be conservative, and diligent sun protection afterward is essential.
It improves them substantially, but complete erasure is not a realistic promise from any treatment. Rolling and boxcar scars respond best because the RF energy reaches the fibrous tethers beneath them. Deep ice-pick scars often need additional approaches such as subcision or excision. Most patients see meaningful improvement over a series rather than total resolution.
Some immediate tightening from collagen contraction, but the real change appears at four to six weeks and continues improving for three to six months as new collagen matures. Each session builds on the last, so the cumulative result at the end of a series is considerably better than after the first treatment.
Yes, and it is a popular pairing. Platelet-rich plasma drawn from your own blood is applied to the skin immediately after treatment, so the growth factors enter through the freshly created channels. Patients typically report faster healing and better texture. Ask about it at your consultation.
It is avoided during pregnancy, with active acne infections or cold sores in the treatment area, with a history of keloid scarring, or if you have taken isotretinoin within the last six months. Patients with pacemakers or certain implanted electronic devices should not have radiofrequency treatments. Disclose your full medical history at consultation.
