For faces that move a lot. Refyne softens laugh lines while flexing with your expressions instead of freezing against them.
Restylane Refyne is built with XpresHAn technology, which produces a gel engineered to stretch and recoil with facial movement. The design goal was straightforward: correct the fold at rest without producing a lower face that looks rigid when you laugh.
That matters because the lower face never stops moving. Speech, smiling, and eating flex the tissue around the mouth thousands of times a day. A filler that is too firm in that environment can feel like a ridge and look unnatural in motion — fine in a photograph, wrong in conversation.
Refyne is the softer, more flexible of the pair; Defyne is its firmer counterpart for deeper folds.
The two products differ mainly in how much correction they can hold.
Choose Refyne when folds are mild to moderate, your skin is thinner, and preserving natural movement is the priority. It integrates softly and is very forgiving.
Choose Defyne when folds are deep and etched and need genuine structural support. Defyne is firmer while remaining flexible relative to traditional fillers.
Some patients receive both — Defyne for deeper support and Refyne closer to the surface. As with all HA fillers, both are reversible with hyaluronidase.
Filler is not a commodity procedure. Where product sits relative to bone, muscle, and vasculature decides whether a result looks refreshed or overdone. At Modern Aesthetica the founder and medical director, Dr. Daniel Moghadam, performs the injections himself rather than delegating to a technician.
We do not begin with a product. We begin with what is actually happening in your face — where volume has gone, how your skin behaves when it moves, how light falls across your cheekbones. The right filler follows from that. Sometimes the answer is a different treatment entirely, and we will say so.
We would rather place less and refine at your follow-up than overfill. Hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved if needed, but a face that has been overcorrected takes real time to recover its proportions.
Fillers are priced per syringe. You will know how many syringes are planned and what the total is before anything is injected. Current offers are on our promotions page.
Dr. Moghadam assesses your facial structure at rest and in motion, identifies where volume has been lost, and explains which product suits that tissue and why.
Most fillers contain lidocaine, and we apply topical numbing beforehand. Comfort is genuinely manageable for the great majority of patients.
Product is placed through a fine needle or a blunt cannula depending on the area. Most treatments run 20 to 45 minutes.
You will see the change in a mirror before you leave. Mild swelling is normal and settles over several days.
We assess the settled result and add product only if an area genuinely needs balancing.
Expect some swelling and the possibility of bruising — this is an injection, and the face is vascular. Most swelling resolves within three to five days, and the result you will keep is visible at about two weeks.
Call us at (213) 895-4730 if you develop unusual pain, blanching or dusky discoloration of the skin, or vision changes. These are rare, but they are treated urgently — one more reason to be injected by a physician.
Most patients find it very manageable. Nearly all modern fillers include lidocaine, and we apply topical numbing cream before starting. You will feel pressure and a brief pinch at each entry point. Lip treatments are the most sensitive area and we take extra care there.
Most people return to work the same or next day. Expect mild swelling for three to five days, and possible bruising for up to a week. If you have an important event, book at least two weeks ahead so the result has fully settled.
Hyaluronic acid fillers — the Juvederm and Restylane families — can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase, usually within a day or two. This is a meaningful safety advantage and one reason we favor HA products for most patients. Collagen stimulators such as Sculptra are not reversible, which is why we dose them gradually.
Pricing is per syringe, and how many syringes you need depends on the area and the degree of volume loss. Lips typically take one syringe; restoring mid-face volume often takes two or more. We give you the exact syringe count and total at your complimentary consultation, before any treatment begins. Call (213) 895-4730 to schedule.
Up to twelve months for most patients treating nasolabial folds and marionette lines. Very expressive patients may see somewhat less, since constant movement gradually breaks the product down.
Both use flexible XpresHAn technology, but Defyne is firmer and holds more correction, making it right for deep, etched folds. Refyne is softer and more flexible, better for mild to moderate lines and thinner skin where a firm product could show as a ridge.
That is precisely what it was designed for. The gel stretches and recoils with movement rather than resisting it, so the correction holds at rest without creating a stiff or shelf-like appearance in motion. It is a common choice for patients who have disliked firmer fillers in the past.
It can be used for subtle lip softening in some patients, though it is not its primary indication. For lips we usually prefer a product formulated for that tissue, such as Volbella. Dr. Moghadam will recommend based on your lip anatomy and the result you want.
